My brother Bill has always had a good sense of humor (just ask him!).

Growing up, our parents often took us to the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, where we both developed an appreciation for modern art. One of Bill's favorite artists was Mark Rothko.

Years later, Bill asked if I would paint something for his new house "in the style of Rothko."

Then he grinned and said, "You could call it a painting by Marthko!"

After the obligatory eye roll, I decided to give it a try on a smaller canvas to see if I was headed in the right direction.

Update: They've since decided on a different color palette, so for now, Marthko is still in the planning stages.
