About Martha

As an Artist:

My goal is to create art that people can connect with—work that invites curiosity, conversation, reflection, and perhaps teaches us something along the way.

People are drawn to art for countless reasons: the colors, a memory it evokes, a feeling it stirs, or even a personal connection to the artist. There is no single "right" way to experience art, and I embrace that individuality in every piece I create.

I've always believed that learning is a lifelong process. During my years as an educator, I discovered that my students often taught me as much as I taught them. Painting has become much the same. Every canvas begins with an idea, but very few end where I expected. Along the way, each painting has something to teach me—about patience, perspective, perseverance, or simply letting go. Those lessons have become just as meaningful as the finished artwork itself.

I believe art becomes most impactful when it sparks dialogue. I welcome conversations from all perspectives because they continue that process of discovery—not only about art, but about people and the many ways we experience the world. Every discussion, every interpretation, and every unexpected insight helps me grow as both an artist and a person.

My work includes both original pieces and professionally reproduced prints of my originals. I also create commissioned artwork, collaborating with individuals to bring their ideas to life in a meaningful and personal way. My primary medium is acrylic paint, although I also work with oils, graphite, and colored pencil, and have explored mixed media. Most of my work is traditionally two-dimensional. Some pieces are available as prints, while others remain one-of-a-kind originals.

If you have questions, ideas, or are interested in a custom piece, I would love to hear from you.

My story:

I grew up in Northfield, MN and graduated with a Visual Arts degree from Brown University. At various points in my life I have lived in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Nebraska, and I currently live in a northern suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Before focusing on my artwork full time, my experiences included owning a swimming lesson business, coaching club and high school swimming, working full-time as a Firefighter/EMT, working as a freelance artist, and teaching high school art for 16 years. During those 16 years, I taught everything from drawing, painting, ceramics, and sculpture to mixed media, digital photography, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

Each chapter has taught me something different, and together they've shaped both the artist and the person I am today.

I believe life is full of adventures, even the small ones. Sometimes, that simply means getting up in the morning!
