One of the things I enjoy most about painting is giving myself little challenges.

With this piece, I wanted to move away from carefully copying a still life and instead create one from imagination. I also challenged myself to work primarily with cool colors, using warmer accents sparingly to create contrast and draw the eye through the composition.

As the painting developed, I added a simple vase with some flowers. Somehow they gave the arrangement a sense of being more put together.

The Flowers Add Class.

Whether they actually do is up to the viewer.
